The Coaching Super-Visor
Book
From July to December 2025, I am actively enrolled in the Coaching Supervision course with Damian Goldvarg. As part of my learning journey, I am summarizing my weekly insights and translating them into a developing manuscript that captures my evolving understanding of the coaching supervision context. To date, I have written approximately 115 pages, reflecting my personal interpretation and application of the supervision landscape.
I warmly invite those interested to journey with me as I continue to explore and refine the themes advertised in the forthcoming volume. This is truly a journey in progress, where I am, metaphorically, “flinging the sand of innovation into the air” around this incredible and impactful skill set of coaching supervision.
Each month, I will post a draft chapter or section at the bottom of this page. If you're curious or would like to engage with the unfolding content, feel free to peruse the attached PDF. Thank you for walking alongside me in this dynamic process of discovery, reflection, and development.
An Invitation to the Clinical Journey of Supervision
The Coaching Supervisor:
A Clinical Journey into the World of Coaching Supervision and Practitioner Reflection
In a world where coaching continues to evolve into a highly reflective and relational practice, The Coaching Supervisor extends an invitation to those who feel called to walk alongside coaches—not as instructors or evaluators, but as thinking partners, mindful allies, and critical friends. This book is not merely an academic offering—it is a clinical journey that immerses readers in the world of coaching supervision, where insight, growth, and transformation converge.
Written for those who aspire to become supervisors of coaches, this book explores the core philosophy, best practices, and multiple models of coaching supervision, weaving together established theory, practical application, and reflective depth. Grounded in the standards of both the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC), this text is designed to prepare readers for formal certification in coaching supervision—particularly with the EMCC, whose Supervision Accreditation remains a gold standard for practitioners globally.
At its heart, The Coaching Supervisor defines supervision as a collaborative, reflective, and relational space designed to support, develop, and ethically guide coaches in their professional journey. The book unpacks the three primary functions of supervision as widely recognized by leading scholars:

-
Developmental – to build the skill, awareness, and maturity of the coach.
-
Supportive – to care for the emotional well-being of the coach.
-
Qualitative/Normative – to ensure ethical and professional integrity.
Drawing from the thought leadership of Peter Hawkins, this volume devotes careful attention to his influential Seven-Eyed Model of Supervision, providing a full treatment of each eye—exploring the coach-client relationship, the client’s world, the coach’s internal process, the supervisor-supervisee dynamic, and the wider systemic context. Each “eye” is brought to life with examples, exercises, and questions that invite real-world integration.
In a unique contribution, the book integrates Nancy Kline’s Thinking Environment®, particularly as presented in her profound work More Time to Think. Kline’s 10 components of a thinking environment—such as attention, appreciation, ease, and equality—are interwoven into the supervisory stance as vital ingredients for fostering profound reflection. This intersection invites the supervisor to not only notice what the coach is doing, but how the space is being held for insight to emerge.
As the clinical journey unfolds, the text explores in detail the Reflective Practice in Supervision model developed by Daphne Hewson and Michael Carroll, highlighting key domains such as:

-
The supervisor’s preparation and role
-
The practitioner’s entry into supervision
-
The reflective space as a sacred domain for growth
-
The dark side of reflective practice (including shame, conflict, and risk)
-
The organizational impact of supervision
-
The necessity of somatic observation and emotional containment
Each section is accompanied by personal reflection, discussion prompts, and illustrations from real coaching supervision engagements—making the book both theoretical and deeply practical.
This volume also references the modern contributions of Damian Goldvarg, a globally recognized leader in the supervision field, particularly his emphasis on systemic awareness, reflective inquiry, and global competency frameworks. These perspectives are incorporated into the training lens of the book, drawing connections between competence, compassion, and courage in supervision.
Ultimately, The Coaching Supervisor is more than a guide—it is a call to a vocation. Those who walk this journey will emerge not only with the knowledge and methodology required for effective supervision, but also with a refined inner stance: reflective, ethical, grounded, and human.
Whether you are preparing to mentor emerging coaches, cultivate reflective spaces for growth, or apply for certification through the EMCC Supervision Accreditation (ESIA) process, this book is your one-stop companion for both conceptual mastery and real-world application.
